Light, fresh and made for warm evenings. This month’s white is a southern French blend that over-delivers at its price. Here is what makes it worth trying.
A French white that punches above its price
The La Vieille Ferme range has been produced since 1967 and is widely regarded as one of the best-value white wines in the world. The Blanc is a blend of Grenache Blanc, Vermentino, Bourboulenc and Ugni Blanc, grown in the southern Rhône Valley where the warm climate and clay-gravel soils produce wines with natural freshness and good structure.
What is in the bottle
This is a dry, unoaked white with a pale golden colour and green highlights. On the nose, expect aromas of white peach, pear, citrus blossom and a delicate bouquet of white flowers. There is a freshness to it that makes it immediately inviting.
On the palate, the wine is crisp and light-bodied with good acidity. Flavours of lemon, green apple and a hint of Provençal herbs come through cleanly. The finish is dry and refreshing, with a faint mineral edge that keeps it interesting.
Because it is fermented and aged entirely in stainless steel, there is no oak influence. What you get is the grape and the terroir, nothing else added. It is exactly the kind of white wine that suits Singapore's climate well.
What to pair it with
The acidity and lightness of this wine make it a versatile food companion.
- Steamed fish or seafood: The clean citrus notes complement delicate proteins without competing with them.
- Chicken rice: The wine's freshness works well with the subtle richness of poached chicken and the fragrant rice.
- Light salads and appetisers: Works well as an aperitif or alongside a spread of lighter dishes before the main.
- Soft cheese: A fresh goat's cheese or a mild brie pairs well with the wine's floral and citrus character.
